Senior Attorneys
Isn't it supposed to get easier?

Although you may have achieved senior attorney status, you
are now faced with a new set of career challenges.  What are
your next steps?  What are your opportunities for
advancement?  In order to improve your career outlook in all
of these areas, it is critical to focus on certain key professional
skills.
Click here to learn about how to:

  • Communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Know how to delegate and supervise.
  • Be customer service-focused.
  • Find an internal sponsor or mentor.
  • Stay informed and well-trained.
  • Develop business.

What next?

At this stage of your career, you may be wondering where the
path will take you.  You may be on partnership track or, more
than likely, you are one of the many senior attorneys
struggling to find a place for themselves in a very volatile legal
climate.  There is often much uncertainty at this stage of one's
legal career when one would have hoped for the opposite
after all that hard work.  You may not be able to control
whether or not you are offered partner or member status or a
senior position or if one is even available for you, but you can
and should try and keep your options open.  Developing a
career plan at this stage is not too late.  Frankly, it may be the
very best time to sit back and evaluate what you have
accomplished so far and your options for the future.

At this stage of your life, you may also consider whether a
legal career is the path for you going forward. There are
enough miserable lawyers out there who have not stopped
and re-evaluated their life and career options.  This is as
good a time as any.  You have experience at this point and
are more mobile than you probably realize.
